At Via Design, we believe that architecture should not only respond to the unique characteristics of its site but also enhance the quality of life for its occupants. Our design concept for the student hostel building at Shoolini University in Himachal Pradesh is rooted in a deep understanding of the natural terrain and the needs of its users.
The terrain of the site, characterized by steep gradients and mountainous surroundings, posed both challenges and opportunities for our design team. We envisioned a hostel building that seamlessly integrates with the natural landscape, rising in tandem with the slopes and maximizing the use of available space while providing a comfortable and inspiring living environment for students.
Drawing inspiration from the rugged beauty of the Himalayas and the simplicity of vernacular architecture, our design palette embraces exposed materials like brickwork and concrete to create a sense of authenticity and connection to the surrounding landscape. The use of natural materials not only reflects the project’s budget constraints but also adds to its aesthetic appeal and sustainability.
The layout of the site precluded access to favourable south sun. In response to this constraint, the building was orientated along the north-south axis to ensure that all student accommodations receive either morning or afternoon sunlight, enhancing the overall comfort and well-being of its occupants.
The layout of the building is carefully planned to optimise space utilisation and circulation, while also providing ample natural ventilation and daylighting. Shared amenities such as common areas, study lounges, and outdoor recreational spaces are strategically located to encourage social interaction and community engagement among students.
The student hostel building at Shoolini University is more than just a place to live—it’s a reflection of our commitment to thoughtful design, sustainability, and enhancing the quality of life for its occupants. Through our design, we aim to create a welcoming and inspiring environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally.
